Manager

Recommended Prerequisites

As managers are expected to understand the processes and basics of managing, some classes have prerequisite courses from the UFundamentals program and LinkedIn Learning. The following UFundamentals courses are recommended prior to beginning the UManage program.

UManage Program Requirements

UManage is comprised of nine full-day courses offered throughout the year at various times. Managers must attend the first two courses in order. Courses three through nine may be taken in any order. All nine courses are required.

Successful managers know who they are as leaders. Understanding yourself, understanding others, and learning how to work together in a positive way is the first step to building and leading high-performing teams.

In this course, the manager will explore their personal portrait through the use of Lumina Spark. The tool is built around the model of personality first identified by Swiss psychologist Carl Gustav Jung.

Participants will be required to complete the Lumina assessment or Insights Discovery prior to attending this course of the UManage program.

Important: To complete this course you will need to use Continuing Education Tuition Support credits to cover the cost of the assessment or provide an alternative form of payment.

Please note, if you have already taken Lumina Spark or the Insights Discovery Workshop (as part of a team, in ULead or an open enrollment session) you do not need to retake this workshop in UManage. Please send an email to [email protected] so we can ensure you have received credit for this workshop.

In this course, the manager will:

  • Develop self-awareness of their personal preferences and capabilities
  • Identify the impact of their preferences and leadership on others
  • Learn how to adapt their preferences to connect to peers and staff effectively
  • Understand their communication style and how it impacts others

Approaching leadership as a measurable, learnable, and teachable set of behaviours, The Leadership Challenge framework grew out of rigorous research that first began in 1982 when Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner set out to understand those times when leaders performed at their personal best. What emerged were five fundamental practices common to extraordinary leadership achievements. Now known worldwide as the most practical model of leadership development, The Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership® continues to prove its effectiveness in cultivating and liberating the leadership potential in anyone — at any level, in any organization — who chooses to accept the challenge to lead.

The University of Calgary leverages The Leadership Challenge model throughout various leadership programs including ULead and the Academic Leadership program.

In this course, the manager will:

  • Learn about the nature of leadership and the differences between management and leadership
  • Understand the key responsibilities of leading people
  • Gain insight into the Leadership Challenge and understand the fundamental principles that support each of The Five Practices
  • Identify strategies for Modeling The Way, Inspiring a Shared Vision, Challenging the Process, Enabling Others to Act, and Encouraging the Heart
  • Understand the connection between the five practices and the leadership competencies and apply the competencies in the work environment
  • Recognize areas of development and create an action plan for improvement
