The Biosafety Program is designed to promote and monitor compliance with acts, regulations, directives, standards and guidelines. 

This course is equivalent to prior versions called Biosafety (Biohazard Handling) Training, Biosafety Laboratory Training, Biosafety (Introduction) Training, and Biosafety 1.

Mandatory training for all persons directing or involved in the handling and storage of biohazards for research and teaching purposes.

Optional training for university employees and students who would like to become informed about the biosafety program.

Blood and certain other body fluids may contain microorganisms that cause disease in humans. To minimize the risk of infection, it is important that you know how these bloodborne pathogens are spread, how to avoid exposure and what steps you should take if you are exposed.

Prerequisite: Biosafety (Program) Training

Users will learn signs, symptoms, and risk factors of ergonomic injuries as well as strategies to minimize risk and improve overall comfort.

Formally known as Safe Lifting. 

Mandatory training for University employees who are exposed to noise at or above an 8-hour time-weighted average (TWA) of 82 dBA, or 80 dBA TWA for a 12 hour shift, and for employees who work in areas with noise levels at or above 85 dBA. 

Optional training for university employees and students who would like to become informed about hearing conservation.

Working inside of a laboratory has the potential to expose the worker to a variety of hazardous materials and processes. To minimize the risk of adverse health effects, it is important that workers know; how to identify laboratory hazards, understand the hierarchy of controls and know how to implement the controls and where to find more information on University of Calgary specific procedures.

Prerequisite: WHMIS 2015

Laboratory workers will learn how to detect signs, symptoms, and risk factors related to ergonomic injuries, as well as strategies to minimize risk and improve overall comfort. 

Required training for all university employees, graduate students and post-doctoral fellows working in laboratories.

Portable ladders are one of the handiest, simplest tools that we use. However, careless or improper ladder usage results in many accidents and fatalities each year. This online course has been designed to ensure workers understand the rules of ladder safety and how to use a ladder safely and effectively.

This online course will cover the hazards associated with ladder use, types of ladders, ladder ratings, selecting the correct ladder, setting up your ladder, using ladders safely and the requirements for maintaining, inspecting and storing ladders.

Mandatory training for university employees who use portable or fixed ladders for work activities.

This course covers the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) which is the chemical hazard communication system for workplaces in Canada, which ensures that people have the information they need to work safely with chemicals and hazardous materials. 

WHMIS training is a legislative requirement for all people who work with or around controlled products such as chemicals and biohazardous materials. Canada has aligned the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) with the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS), and this course will discuss the requirements coming from this alignment. This course provides attendees the information on how this system works in their day to day activities. WHMIS training from organizations other than the University of Calgary is not recognized. 

All employees at the University of Calgary have a shared responsibility for maintaining a safe and healthy work environment. As part of the University's Occupational Health and Safety Management System (OHSMS), responsibilities for health and safety have been defined for employees, supervisors and managers.

Formal inspections provide a way to identify and correct potentially hazardous conditions at the workplace. All individuals who conduct inspections need to be trained and familiar with the work areas being inspected.

The purpose of the this training is to inform university employees about the inspection processes at the University of Calgary and how to meet the requirements of the University's OHSMS.
